Taiwan's DPP, KMT Rebuke Beijing Over Tiananmen

Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) on Tuesday both strongly criticised Beijing for failing to vindicate the 1989 pro-democracy movement.

President Tsai Ing-wen said on social media the Beijing's assertion this week that the authorities had done the right thing 30 years ago shows it intends to continue to cover up the truth.

Tsai said Hong Kong refusing to allowed exiled Tiananmen dissident Feng Congde into the SAR to attend this year's June 4th vigil to remember the victims of the massacre provides further evidence of this.

The KMT meanwhile, issued a statement on its website saying that although the mainland’s economic power has grown considerably, Beijing still has to face the past squarely.

The party said history cannot be wiped clean and Beijing must try to meet the public's demands if it wants to move towards a brighter future.
