A Taiwanese tourist was killed and eight others were injured after they were struck by a car on a busy Shanghai road on Sunday. Two of the injured tourists are said to have been seriously hurt.

The Xinhua News Agency described it as a 'car accident' involving a driver who 'mishandled' his vehicle and ran into pedestrians on Xujiahui Road.

A courier was among those injured, but he, along with five of the tourists, were discharged early Sunday evening, Xinhua said.

The report said the driver, surnamed Zhao, is being questioned by police.

Photographs uploaded to social media show passersby trying to lift up a blue sedan in an apparent effort to free people trapped under the vehicle.
