The Tiananmen Mothers group has issued an open letter to President Xi Jinping just days before the 29th anniversary of the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Beijing, calling for a re-evaluation of the events.

They said that since President Xi has pledged to work hard for a better life for his people, he should not ignore the victims of 1989.

The group, founded by families of those killed during the crackdown on June 4, 1989, repeated its call for the authorities to tell people the truth about what happened, hold officials accountable, and compensate those affected

In the letter, the group said 51 members have passed away since the massacre in 1989 and spoke of one of them hanging himself after succumbing to the pain of losing his son.

It criticised Beijing for letting memories of the massacre fade and for not apologising or showing them care, 29 years on.

The surviving family members of the Tiananmen Square victims also complained of surveillance and travel restrictions during major political events and mourning dates.
