Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has named Su Tseng-chang as the island's new premier following the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's heavy losses in recent local elections.
Su's predecessor William Lai and the entire cabinet resigned on Friday in the wake of the poor results.
It is the second time Su has been in the post, with the former DPP chairman serving briefly as premier under former president Chen Shui-bian in 2006.
Analysts say that, with a presidential election just a year away, the independence-leaning DPP needs to shore up support for its cross-strait policy and bolster the island's economy.
The opposition Kuomintang, which favours closer ties with Beijing, won 15 of 22 major seats in the elections on November 24.
