Health authorities in Qingdao say a total of 12 people have so far been confirmed to have contracted Covid-19 after new cases resurfaced in the city over the past week.

The Qingdao Municipal Health Commission said that of the 12 patients, one was in a critical condition and three were "severe".

On Tuesday, the authorities had said six people with symptoms were identified, while six others were declared as asymptomatic cases.

Most of the confirmed patients were linked to the Qingdao Chest Hospital.

The city has so far taken in more than 7.5 million sample specimens from residents, of which more than four million have been tested.

The announcement comes days after Qingdao authorities announced that nine million residents in the city would get everyone tested for coronavirus this week. The testing scheme will end on Friday.

The outbreak followed the Mid-Autumn holiday on the mainland, during which people thronged tourist attractions within the country as international travel remained off-bounds.

According to Qingdao authorities, about 4.47 million tourists visited the city during the holiday period.
