Foreign Minister Wang Yi met his counterparts from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam during a meeting of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation group on Monday in the Myanmar city of Bagan.

The grouping is a Chinese-led initiative that includes the countries of the Mekong Delta. China has built 10 dams along the upper stretch of the Mekong.

It is Wang’s first visit to Myanmar since the military seized power there last year. China is Myanmar's biggest trading partner, with Beijing investing billions of US dollars in Myanmar's mines, oil and gas pipelines and other infrastructure.

On Sunday, Wang met Laos Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith on the sidelines of the meeting, according to Xinhua news agency.

China and Laos expressed their willingness to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and actively promote the building of the China-Laos community.

Wang said the building of the China-Laos community with a shared future has been making significant progress, with bilateral trade climbing against the odds, and the China-Laos Railway running efficiently, Xinhua reported.

The two countries should further strengthen strategic communication, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, jointly face challenges, and safeguard international equity and justice, Wang added. (Xinhua/AP)
