Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Sunday hit out at US plans for the Indo-Pacific region, saying attempts to contain China are "bound to fail".
State media reported that Wang made the comments during talks with Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Guangzhou. They come as US President Joe Biden continues an Asia tour that has taken him to Seoul and will continue in talks with leaders of the Quad group in Tokyo this week.
"The US 'Indo-Pacific Strategy' is causing more and more vigilance and concern in the international community, especially in the Asia-Pacific region," the Xinhua news agency quoted Wang as saying.
He said the use of Indo-Pacific was erase the name "Asia-Pacific" and what he described as the "effective co-operation architecture" in the region.
The minister said people in the region still remember the conflicts and confrontations caused by hegemony, and they want national stability and a happy life.
In an apparent reference to the Quad, Wang said the United States wanted to form "small cliques" in the name of freedom and openness. In fact, he said, the aim was to contain China.
The talks in Tokyo will see Biden meet Anthony Albanese, who will take office as Australian prime minister on Monday, as well as Japanese and Indian leaders.
