Authorities in Shanxi province were on Thursday in a race against time to try to rescue 22 people trapped in a flooded coal mine.

Authorities there blamed illegal mining for the incident.

According to Xinhua News Agency, it happened on Wednesday night at a coal mine in a the city of Xiaoyi.

Rescue work was under way.

Xinhua also said three suspects were "put under control", and authorities were looking for the owner of the mine who'd fled.
