President Xi Jinping on Tuesday visited the city of Shantou as part of his tour of Guangdong province, one day ahead of his highly-anticipated visit to Shenzhen on Wednesday.
State media said Xi visited a cultural exhibition hall and a museum to learn about the city's history and development as a special economic zone, before heading out onto the streets to chat with local residents.
The president had on Monday visited Chaozhou, where he was seen visiting shops, asking for prices at stalls and mingling with the locals, and also toured an electronics factory in the city.
He also visited some cultural and historical landmarks there and called for better protection and development of the city.
Xi will be in Shenzhen on Wednesday to mark the 40th anniversary of the country's first special economic zone.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam and other key SAR officials will also be in attendance.
