State news agency Xinhua has warned that, if Hong Kong's unrest continues, the whole of society is going to pay an even heavier price.
In a commentary, Xinhua said rioters were just venting their hatred by damaging MTR facilities and setting off fires in busy areas.
Xinhua described their actions as "crazy and naive", saying they were a serious threat to social order and people's safety and that they completely ignored the rights of others.
