The new chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong said on Wednesday that members of his association are not worried about their safety when doing businesses in China.
But Robert Grieves said they have not carried out any survey on this.
"Informally I don't see that to be a worry of our members at this point. That is not to say that it won't be in the future, but now it isn't", he said.
Canada has said that more than a dozen of its citizens have been detained on the mainland since the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver early last month.
Meng's arrest was made at the request of US authorities who are seeking her extradition to face charges there.
Grieves also expressed optimism about the high-level trade talks between China and the United States next week.
Vice Premier Liu He will be heading to Washington for a two-day meeting with senior US officials, including Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.
Grieves said the US government shutdown should not overshadow the talks aimed at resolving the trade dispute between China and the United States.
