Hong Kong stocks ended a half-day trading session on Thursday at their highest level since June 2018, as investors squared their positions ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.

The Hang Seng index gained 0.5 percent at 30,173.

The top gainer was Meituan, which was up 3.4 percent, while the biggest percentage loser was Mengniu Dairy, which fell 1.6 percent.

Analysts said a phone call between the leaders of China and the United States aided sentiment, while some investors were on the sidelines awaiting developments.

For the holiday-shortened week, the Hang Seng Index climbed 3 percent.

The Hong Kong market will be closed until February 16. (Reuters)
