Hong Kong's jobless rate has remained steady. The unemployment rate in the three months ending August stood at 2.9 percent, which was unchanged from the previous reading.

The under-employment rate also stayed the same, at 1 percent.

The catering sector saw an increase in unemployment in the latest three-month period but that was offset by an increase in hiring in the construction trade.

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Law Chi-kwong, said the job market will be subject to increasing pressure in the near term amid weak local consumption and a drop in visitor arrivals caused by the recent social unrest over the extradition bill.
