Hong Kong and Shanghai stocks clawed back some of the previous day's hefty losses to end higher on Tuesday as investors cheered China's confirmation that its top negotiator will attend this week's US trade talks despite Donald Trump's tariffs threat.

The Hang Seng Index rose 0.5 percent, to 29,363.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.7 percent, to 2,926 and the Shenzhen Composite Index added 1.6 percent, to 1,540.

Tokyo's key Nikkei index lost more than 1.5 percent on Tuesday following an unprecedented 10-day break.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 1.5 percent, to close at 21,923.

"Today's decline was simply due to trade concern," said Daiwa Securities chief technical analyst Eiji Kinouchi.

"The concern boosted the yen, which then sent exporters down," Kinouchi said. "The market has been trapped in a vicious circle." (AFP)
