Hong Kong's exports have posted their biggest fall since February 2016, as trade tensions between China and the United States put further strains on manufacturing activities and trade flows.

Exports plunged 9 percent in June from a year ago in their eighth consecutive decline.

Shipments to the mainland slumped more than 10 percent in June with falls also recorded in other regional markets except Taiwan.

At the same time, imports also dropped 7.5 percent. For the first half of this year, exports fell 3.6 percent over the same period a year ago and imports fell 4.5 percent.

Looking ahead, the government said the near-term export performance will remain constrained.
