Population To Rise To 8.11m In 2041

Hong Kong’s population is expected to peak at 8.11 million in mid-2041, then decline to 7.35 million by mid-2069, according to the Census & Statistics Department.

The department today released an updated set of population projections covering the next 50 years.

From mid-2019 to mid-2041, the population is projected to grow at a rate of 0.4% per annum.

With a significant increase in the number of deaths due to an ageing population, coupled with a decrease in the number of births, the population is projected to drop at a rate of 0.3% per annum from mid-2041 to mid-2069.

Population ageing is expected to continue.

With post-war baby boomers entering old age, the number of elderly people aged 65 and over is projected to nearly double in the coming 20 years. Excluding foreign domestic helpers, the number of elderly people will increase from 18.4% of the total population in 2019 to 33.3% in 2039.

The elderly population will remain at over 2.5 million for at least 30 years.

Due to the persistently low fertility rate, the proportion of the population under age 15 is projected to fall gradually from 12.2% in 2019 to 7.6% in 2069.

The dependency ratio will rise from 441 in 2019 to 853 in 2069.

The number of males per 1,000 females, excluding foreign domestic helpers, is projected to reduce from 910 in 2019 to 801 in 2069.
