The total value of retail sales in March rose over 11 percent year-on-year to around HK$39.8 billion, thanks to a significant increase in the sale of jewellery, watches, clocks and valuable gifts.
The Census and Statistics Department said on Thursday there was also a rise in the sales of clothes, food and cosmetics.
A government spokesman said the strong retail performance could be attributed to favourable economic conditions and a rise in tourist numbers. He also said retail sales are expected to remain strong.
