The Group of 20 meets today in Buenos Aires for a two-day meeting that’s likely to focus on a possible China-US trade war. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will be in the position of defending President Trump’s trade plans against widespread fears that it could choke off the strongest global growth since the 2008 financial crisis.

News that the US is considering potentially broader anti-China tariffs and investment restrictions as part of a US intellectual property probe have raised worries about a Sino-US trade war.

Reuters reported last week that the Trump administration is considering punitive tariffs on about 60 billion US dollars worth of Chinese information technology, telecoms and consumer products annually.
