US retail sales increased 0.3 percent last month, down from a 0.8 percent gain in March, which was revised higher.

The Commerce Department said the spending gains were spread across most retail categories, with big increases at furniture and clothing stores.

Clothing-store sales, fuelled by price cuts, jumped 1.4 percent, while sales at home and garden stores rose 0.4 percent. A category that includes online and catalogue sales rose 0.6 percent. Petrol station sales rose 0.8 percent.

Spending is likely to remain healthy in the months ahead, buoyed by a strong job market that is showing early signs of lifting Americans' incomes. (AP)
